Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV)

The Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) Antibodies Test is used to identify the presence of that develop in response to the Varicella-Zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles. When you first become infected with the virus, your immune system produces IgM antibodies, which usually indicate a recent or ongoing infection. These antibodies suggest your body has recently encountered the virus, either from an initial infection or, in some cases, a reactivation of the virus, often seen with shingles. Later in the infection IgG antibodies are produced, providing long-lasting immunity. These antibodies remain in your body and help protect against reinfection or the reactivation of the virus in the future. This test is valuable for determining whether you have an active VZV infection or have been exposed to the virus in the past, especially for those who may be at higher risk of complications, such as pregnant women or individuals with weakened immune systems.
