The Post-chelation metals and minerals challenge test (5025) is used to assess the levels of various metals and minerals in a person’s body.
This test is particularly valuable in evaluating exposure to toxic heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic, which can accumulate in the body through environmental sources, occupational hazards, or dietary intake (1).
Even at low levels of exposure certain metals can induce significant health consequences (1). The test typically involves the administration of a chelating agent, such as dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which binds to heavy metals. After the chelating agent is given, a urine sample is collected over a specified period. The urine is then assessed to identify the concentration of metals and minerals excreted f rom the body.
A urinary metals and minerals challenge test is essential for identifying heavy metal toxicity and mineral imbalances. It is particularly important for individuals in occupations with potential metal exposure or those seeking to assess their environmental toxin load.
