What is Detoxification?

Detoxification is the body’s natural process of neutralizing and eliminating harmful substances.  It occurs in two phases:

• Phase I: Enzymes modify toxins, preparing them for phase II. This involves enzymes like CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP1B1, CYP2A6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4, which modify toxins for further processing.
• Phase II: Enzymes conjugate toxins, making them water-soluble for excretion. This involves enzymes like COMT, NAT1, NAT2, GSTM1, GSTP1, and SOD, which conjugate toxins for elimination.
