This non-invasive breath test identifies bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, also known as SIBO or BOSI. In contrast the large intestine, the small intestine is an area that typically has low levels of bacterial colonisation and when this ecosystem is disrupted can cause persistent and unfavourable symptoms. SIBO may lead to malabsorption, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Even asymptomatic patients, especially those with a history of chronic constipation/ diarrhoea, hypochlorhydria, or maldigestion, may benefit from testing as bacterial overgrowth can manifest without clear symptoms.
This panel detects hydrogen and methane production through the consumption both lactulose and fructose substrates.
