About Chu Shong Tin
Internal Wing Chun
Evolution & Practice
Philosophy
For nearly two decades I have walked a path shaped by one of Wing Chun’s most profound traditions. As a teacher of Internal Wing Chun in North Sydney, my practice and my community are rooted in the teachings of the late Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin.
I trained with him in Hong Kong on two separate visits, and over many years, have devoted myself to refining and developing the internal system he revealed.
Chu Shong Tin transformed how Wing Chun was understood by shifting the focus from external technique to an internal architecture of power. Where many schools emphasise visible techniques and rapid repetition, Chu Shong Tin showed that true effectiveness comes from structural alignment, relaxed intent and an economy of movement. He reframed the foundational form, Siu Nim Tao, not as an elementary exercise to be ticked off, but as a lifelong training method for cultivating nim lik — the power of mind-led intention — and for organising the body to transmit force without tension.
Our approach in North Sydney reflects that same transformation. We teach a system designed to deliver real fighting advantages: stronger, more connected, and more effective. Training emphasises whole-body connection, structural timing, and repeatable methods for generating force. This is not an argument about which style is superior; rather, it is a practical study of how to break an opponent’s structure, land heavier hits, and exploit openings when they present themselves, whether in the ring or on the street.
Within Sydney there are many schools associated with Chu Shong Tin’s lineage and many others that identify as Wing Chun but diverge significantly in emphasis. The difference is apparent: some programmes prioritise flashy technique and immediate application; our work prioritises fundamentals — the unseen architecture that makes those techniques reliable under pressure. The training I deliver is shaped by long-term practice with my teacher and this community, and by the direct guidance I received in Hong Kong. It is a synthesis of tradition and practical refinement, committed to clarity and to results.
Students who come to our classes should expect disciplined, methodical training that builds from the inside out. Over time, the physical changes are obvious: hits feel heavier, timing becomes more precise, and balance and connection improve. Equally important are the less visible shifts: a quieter mind in the moment of conflict, a deeper sense of alignment, and an ability to initiate movement from intent rather than effort.
If your interest is improving performance, gaining more durable power, or discovering a reliable system for structural control under pressure, our Internal Wing Chun programme in North Sydney offers a clear, tested path. We welcome practitioners from any background who are ready to invest in fundamentals and in the kind of steady, highly focused practice that Chu Shong Tin dedicated his life to developing.
